Jamaica Land I love

             Black, Green & Gold

Jamaica is known worldwide because of our famous athletes, musicians, actors etc., even though I am grateful for such positive light being shed on our island there is much more than that to Jamaica. Here are a few other things about the beautiful place I call home for nearly all my life.

This is not ‘hear say’ but what I have experienced growing up! As a child, we all had to learn the national anthem and sang it or say the pledge every morning at our school’s devotion. It is amazing that people know the national anthem and flag because of Usain Bolt and sings along each time he is on the podium accepting his gold medal, however, our children know this by heart from as early as 3 years old.

Going home each time for me is a happy occasion. I just love when that plane touches the tarmac and the pilot says ‘we have landed in Kingston, for those who are returning, welcome home’. My heart skips a beat each time and a smile touches my face after I leave customs and ventures outside to greet my family.

It’s like I can hear the hummingbirds flying about chasing the sweet nectars from the roses flower, or I can taste the jelly water from the back of the yard, no one can understand the feeling unless you are a Jamaican living abroad and cannot wait to get home for even 3 weeks of vacation. Outside of our athletes, these things bring me pride!

Jamaica’s culture is rich and filled with amazement to the outside world. There are so many different musical backgrounds, traditional rhythms and songs outside of dancehall and reggae.

The National Anthem

Eternal Father bless our land,
Guard us with Thy Mighty Hand,
Keep us free from evil powers,
Be our light through countless hours.
To our Leaders, Great Defender,
Grant true wisdom from above.
Justice, Truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, Land we love.
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love.

Teach us true respect for all,
Stir response to duty’s call, strengthen us the weak to cherish,
Give us vision lest we perish.
Knowledge send us Heavenly Father,
Grant true wisdom from above.
Justice, Truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love.
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love.

The National Pledge

Before God and all mankind, I pledge the love and loyalty of my heart, the wisdom, and courage of my mind, the strength and vigour of my body, in the service of my fellow citizens; I promise to stand up for Justice, Brotherhood, and Peace, to work diligently and creatively, to think generously and honestly, so that Jamaica may, under God, increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity, and play her part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race.
